Forró in the Park: Outdoor Dance Classes and Social Dancing in NYC

There is something special about dancing outdoors in New York City.

During the warmer months, when the weather, schedule, and interest from students make it possible, Forró New York occasionally moves its weekly classes into the city’s parks. What began as a practical seasonal alternative has become a recurring part of our community’s history: an opportunity to learn, dance, and spend time together in a more open and relaxed environment.

The exact dates and locations change from year to year, so students should always check our weekly forró classes and tickets page for current information.

A History of Dancing Outdoors in New York

Over the years, our outdoor forró classes have appeared in different parts of the city.

We have danced in Washington Square Park and on a pedestrianized street nearby. As New York began gathering again after the pandemic, we held classes around Turtle Pond and near the Obelisk in Central Park. We have also danced at a Brooklyn waterfront park with the Manhattan skyline behind us.

In more recent seasons, City Hall Park has become an especially welcoming location. It is centrally located, easy to reach from different parts of the city, visually beautiful, and generally calm enough for focused learning and social dancing.

These places are more than backdrops. Each one becomes part of the memory of a particular season in the Forró New York community.

More Than an Outdoor Dance Class

A park class follows the same educational principles as our studio program. Students still receive structured instruction centered on fundamentals, rhythm, partner connection, musicality, and the gradual development of their dance.

The outdoor setting, however, changes the rhythm of the evening.

Students are often invited to arrive before class for informal practice. After the lesson ends, people may stay longer to dance, talk, listen to music, or simply enjoy being together. The boundary between class and social gathering becomes a little more flexible.

This makes forró in the park especially valuable for newer students. They can experience social dancing in a setting that feels open and approachable, while still having the guidance and structure of a class.

Learning With Structure in a More Relaxed Environment

Outdoor classes may feel less formal, but they are not less intentional.

The same methodology and attention to detail remain present. Movements are introduced progressively, students rotate partners, and the material is adapted to the experience of the group. Complete beginners can participate alongside returning students without needing to arrive with a partner.

The park simply gives everyone more room to breathe, interact, and connect the learning process with the social nature of forró.
